Greece – unauthorised DNA fragment identified in rice crakers
On 24 December 2010, the Greek authorities notified the EU’s RASFF* system that it had identified a fragment of genetically modified DNA known as ‘CaMV 35S promoter’ in rice crackers. The product was identified at the Greek border and was prevented from entering the country or the EU. For more details see RASFF No. 2010.CIL
*The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) is used by the EU Member States, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Switzerland. It was put in place to provide food and feed control authorities with a tool to exchange information about measures taken responding to serious risks detected in relation to food or feed.
