Switzerland: GM pollen in imported honey
Zurich, 9th June 2009.
Greenpeace tested 20 imported and 2 Swiss honey products. In 6 imported products traces of GE pollen were found. The GE pollen originates from genetically engineered corn, canola or soy. The Swiss honeys were tested negative.
The following products were found to contain GM Pollen.
- Goldland – Miel de fleur crémeux - Argentine
- Goldland – Miel de fleurs d’été - Europe and South America
- Langnese – Miel de fleurs d’été – Europe, Central and South America
- Coop – Miel de fleurs - Europe, Central and South America
- Clover Crest – Miel de trèfle – Canada
- M-Budget – Miel de fleurs liquide – North and South America.
Honey from Europe and the Americas are likely to be contaminated with GM maize or soya pollen. However the honey from Canada is more likely to be contaminated with pollen from GM canola/oilseed rape – even though the bees for this honey were mainly feeding on clover (Trifolium spp).
The contaminated honeys have been sold in Coop, Migros and Aldi food stores. GE pollen in honey doesn’t have to be labelled in Switzerland.
