Mexico – GM maize contamination found again in 2003

An study carried out in 2003 by a coalition of indigenous communities, along with local and international NGOS found positive results for GE in maize varieties of communities in the States of Oaxaca, Puebla, Chihuahua, Morelos, Estado de México, San Luis Potosí, Durango, Tlaxcala y Veracruz.

Supported by academics of the Mexico National Autonomous University the peasant and indigenous communities took maize samples in 138 communities in 9 states to test them. GE positive results where found in all 9 states and in the 24% of the communities sampled.

This study was not reviewed by the Mexican Government or other peer reviewed bodies, since the affected communities feared to be discriminated due to this pollution and decided not to release further information on their results, sampling and testing methods. In June 2007, a study was published in the Ecology Society of America’s journal Frontiers in Ecology. The paper confirmed that investigations carried out in 2003 detected the presence of GE maize (EPSPS, Cry1Ab and Cry9C) in a conservation soil area in the Federal District in Milpa Alta, Xochimilco and Tlahuac delegations. Local authorities declared that such GE cultivation had not been authorised. Nevertheless, promised monitoring systems had not yet been established.
