France – Second illegal variety GM rice identified in US imports
In October 2006, French authorities announced that they had found Bayer’s GM LLRice62 in rice imports from the USA. This variety of GM rice does not have approval in Europe and is not reported to be grown commercially in the USA even though it has approval there. LL62 rice is genetically modified to tolerate Bayer’s herbicide, glufosinate (Liberty).
The finding of LLRICE62 contamination follows on from the detection, in August 2006, of widespread contamination of US long-grain rice with another Bayer GM variety, LLRICE601 (see separate register entry). The source of the contamination in both cases is not known.
The European Commission is proposing to introduce stricter testing protocols for imports of rice into Europe which will include LLRice 62.
