USA - Environmental rules broken in allowing trials with GM crops producing drugs

A judge has ruled that the US Department of Agriculture was Ďarbitrary and capriciousí because it did not conduct environmental studies or explain why they were not necessary before issuing permits for experimental trials with GM crops modified to produce drugs.

The trials in Hawaii involved GM maize and sugar cane produced by ProdiGene, Monsanto, the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center, and Garst Seed, and were conducted between 2001 and 2003. The crops had been modified to produce hormones, vaccines against AIDS and hepatitis B, and proteins to treat diseases.
