Brazil - Syngenta conducts illegal trial with GM soybeans

The agrochemical company, Syngenta, planted a trial plot of around 12 hectares of GM soya in a buffer zone around the Iguacu Falls World Heritage Site, southern Brazil. Brazilian legislation prohibits the release of GM organisms in protected areas and their surroundings. The plantings were about 4 miles (6 km) from the park, while the allowed distance is 6 miles (10 km).

Parana's Governor, Roberto Requião is reported to have offered to have Syngenta's soybeans burnt immediately, declaring that he wants to continue to keep the State free of GMOs. Brazil's minister for Environment, Marina Silva, also announced that the case would be investigated and would eventually lead to prosecutions.

The trial site was occupied by over 1,000 farmers from "Via Campesina" an organisation representing small farmers in the region.

On 21 March 2006, the Brazilian Environment Protection Agency, IBAMA, announced that it would fine Syngenta one million reais (386,000 Euros) for the offence. Syngenta has said it will appeal against the fine.
