China – Heinz baby food contains illegal GM rice
Tests of nineteen foods collected in supermarkets in Beijing, China, revealed unapproved GM rice in one product, Heinz Baby Rice Cereal. The tests were conducted for Greenpeace by the independent laboratory, Genescan, and revealed the presence of a Bt toxin gene which makes GM rice resistant to insects.
Illegal growing of GM rice in China was first revealed in 2005 and measures have been taken to prevent further sales and although this has been partially sucessful, a black market in GM seeds still exists.
Further testing in March 2006, of Heinz rice products by the independent Hong Kong-based lab, DNA Chips, identified GM ingredients in 5 samples. Two of the Heinz products came from Hong Kong and three from Guangzhou. A sample of ParknShop’s own brand rice from Guangzhou, was also found to contain gene sequences indicating it contained GM rice. No GM is authorised for sale in China.
