Romania – unauthorized trials with GM plums

In September 2005, Greenpeace discovered unauthorized experimental trials with GM plum trees at the Research and Development Station for Trees in Bistri?a, Romania. The GM trees have been modified to contain a gene giving resistance to the antibiotics neomycin and kanamycin.

Under Romanian law, a permit is required for all releases of GM organisms but the research station did not have such permission.

According to Greenpeace in Romania, the Ministry of Environment has inspected the research and confirmed the existence of the illegal plum trees. The trials are to be halted and a fine may be imposed.
